Bio:

Deborah Smilovitz Foster, Ph.D., M.A., is a registered psychological assistant in private practice in Santa Barbara under the supervision of Radhule Weininger, M.D., Ph.D.  She has been trained as a nurse and teacher (pre-school and elementary), and specializes in pediatric neuropsychology.  These specialties have provided a strong foundation about how physiological, neurological, and psychological processes interact.  Deborah has studied and worked with children for over 15 years.  Her clinical training began at the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (El Puente High School), Domestic Violence Solutions & Anger Management for Santa Barbara County, Santa Barbara County Mental Health Access Team/A.D.M.H.S., and Family Service Agency.

Deborah Smilovitz Foster is an American developmental neuropsychologist.  Her research at the internationally acclaimed Reiss-Davis Child Study Center in Los Angeles is part of a group of child study centers that include the Yale and Harvard Child Study Centers.  Her research on balanced internal and external regulation, parent child attachment, recovering from trauma and therapeutic interventions was done with Dr. Jim Grotstein of UCLA Medical School.  Dr. Grotstein works closely with and has written the forward to many of the books written by the expert on healthy child parent attachment, Allan Schore.

Dr. Smilovitz Foster earned a Ph.D. from Pacifica Graduate Institute at Santa Barbara in 2012, currently has a private practice and works at the Mental Wellness Center.

In addition to a Ph.D., Deborah also has a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Global Peace and Security.  Her undergraduate research on solving child abuse nonviolently in our community, used Gandhi’s notion of satyagraha, the search for truth.

Dr. Smilovitz Foster has given talks and led workshops at schools, Mental Health centers and to parents and professionals for the last several years.  She offers consultation to parents who are looking toward a nonviolent, healthy, balanced way to relate with their family members and themself.  She is confident that these skills and tools work toward creating a compassionate, loving and kind relationship that makes each person and situation less stressful and more balanced.

Deborah’s current work with Dr. Radhule Weininger focuses on Cultivating Emotional Balance and Mindfulness Meditation.  Dr. Weininger is a physician and psychologist whose work spans 30 years in collaboration with the Dalai Lama on this topic.  Dr. Smilovitz lives in Santa Barbara, California and is available for personalized individual sessions, lectures, workshops and consultations.
